Why fill the screen with buttons when you already have plenty of tangible keys at your fingertips? There are no magic combinations to memorize- a single keystroke is all it takes. For example, the plus key amplifies the spectrum while the minus key reduces it. The arrow keys let you navigate the spectrum, Page Up and Page Down let you navigate pages, z is for zooming, i for integrating, etc. If you keep a key pressed down, its action is continuously repeated. Not having to press two keys simultaneously means you can have a hand free to hold the mouse.
